Slenderness ratio

Description

Column or pillar in architecture and structural engineering is a structural element that transmits, through compression, the weight of the structure above to other structural elements below. An ideal column is one that is perfectly straight, homogeneous, and free from initial stress. Radius of gyration or gyradius refers to the distribution of the components of an object around an axis. The ratio of the effective length of a column to the least radius of gyration of its cross section is called the slenderness ratio.
